GOALS
The goal of the Sports Medicine Program is to
provide quality health care to all student-athletes of Penn-Trafford
School District. This
is accomplished through the collective efforts of the School Medical
Director, the staff Certified Athletic Trainers, Student Athletic
Trainer Aides, and associated medical specialists.
PROGRAM
The school district offers a Sports Medicine
class, which is instructed by Mr. Cooper. The class is a 1 semester, 1 credit course that
is geared towards those individuals interested in pursing a health
related profession. The class covers basic anatomy, injury prevention,
evaluation and treatment, rehabilitation principles, protective taping
and wrapping techniques, and CPR. Guest speakers from various
medical professions add to the classroom lectures and labs. These
students help provide coverage at practices and games of various
athletic activities.
STUDENT ATHLETIC TRAINER AIDES
Those students who
participate in the program are required to work two out of three
athletic seasons. Their responsibilities include
coverage of after school practices and home and away games, which
may include nights and weekends. Schedules are done prior to
the season in conjunction with the Certified Athletic Trainers and
the other SATA’s working that sport. After the schedule
is completed, all effort should be made to adhere to it, promoting
communication and dependability/reliability, which are traits necessary
to succeed in the program. There is a plaque and a monetary
award for the Outstanding Senior Student Athletic Trainer Aide
given at the end of each year.
REPORTING OF INJURIES
All injuries that occur during
athletic practice or competition should be reported to the Head Coach
of that sport and then to the staff Certified Athletic Trainer. This
needs to be done as soon as possible so that we may determine the
extent of the injury, make appointments to secure timely and appropriate
evaluations and help return the athlete to pre-injury status in a
timely fashion without compromising the safety of the student athlete. If
the injury occurs before a season starts, please secure a medical release
from a licensed physician before tryouts/participation begins
and turn it into the Certified Athletic Trainers.
PRE-PARTICIPATION PHYSICALS
It is necessary for
all students who are trying out for an athletic team to have a cleared
physical before the first day of the tryouts/practice. PIAA rules
state that athletic physicals need to be completed June 1st or later
to be good for the upcoming athletic season. There
is a required form that needs to be completed and signed by both
the parents and examining physician. Penn-Trafford School District
offers pre-participation physical examination, which includes a musculoskeletal
screening in conjunction with the physical exam, one time in the
summer. The date is usually a few days after the end of the
school year. Look for dates in the Prospectus and also beginning
May 1st when forms are available in the offices of the high school
and Penn and Trafford Middle schools. No student athletes
will be permitted to practice without a completed physical. Athletic
physicals are required before any student begins practicing with
a team and no copies of the card stock forms will be accepted.
Any
student athlete that has a chronic medical condition needs to obtain
a written clearance for participation from the attending
licensed physician and present this clearance at the time
of the pre-participation physical examination.
REHABILITATION and TREATMENTS
The athletic training
room at Penn-Trafford High School has numerous rehabilitative equipment
and therapeutic modalities that can be used to properly rehabilitate
most injuries. Some of the equipment
available are ultrasound, electrical stimulation, Jobst Compression,
whirlpool, Swiss ball, polymeric balls, BAPS board, slide board,
Theraband, treadmill, stationary bike, Cryo-cuff, Nautilus Weight
Circuit, free weights, aquatic therapy in the swimming pool, Aqua
vest, Dyna-disc, wobble boards, manual resistive exercises, dynamic
stabilization techniques, McConnell taping, Orthoplast Pad Fabrication,
protective wrapping and taping techniques.
If an athlete needs to utilize these services it is necessary for
them to report to the athletic training room at least 30 minutes
before the start of their practice/game. At this time rehabilitation
will be conducted and playing/practice status determined as well
as any necessary taping procedures.
NO
taping procedures are done without a proper evaluation and going
through the necessary associated rehabilitation program first.
ATHLETIC TRAINING ROOM HOURS
Certified Athletic
Trainers are on duty Mon-Fri from 2:25 pm until the end of activities
held at the school. Saturday hours start
1/2 hour before the beginning of practice. Saturday times vary
but for the most part begin at 7:30 am. It is the athlete’s
responsibility to report to the athletic training room early enough
to complete all necessary rehab prior to the start of practices and
games.
SCHOOL INSURANCE
The Penn-Trafford School District provides, at no charge
to the parents of the student-athlete, an Accident/Injury Insurance
Policy. This
acts as a secondary policy for injuries suffered while participating
in a school sponsored athletic activity. Details are available
from Mr. Cooper.
RETURN TO PRACTICE/PLAY
If your son/daughter suffers an injury during
a high school sponsored practice/game that requires evaluation by
a licensed physician,
it is necessary to obtain a signed written note to clarify what the
diagnosis was, the status on return to practice/play, and any treatment
that the physician wants the Certified Athletic Trainers to follow. This
is necessary for any visits to a licensed physician, including dentists,
family physicians, dermatologists, etc. It is best to follow
the rule to always obtain a signed written release whenever
you see a physician. An example of this would be if your
son/daughter sees a physical therapist, massage therapist or chiropractor
and they are withheld from participation for any reason, they will
need to secure a written release from a licensed physician (MD) before
they can return to any level of participation.
