HELPING YOUR CHILD AT HOME
Elementary Students-
Reading/Language Arts:
- Reinforce the reading curriculum at the McGraw Hill Reading Site – http://www.mhschool.com/reading/2005/student/index.html.
Click on “reading” and then click on the drop down box
and drag to McGraw Hill Reading 2003. Find your reading book
and click on it.
- Reading to and with your elementary aged child at home assists with
reading comprehension and vocabulary development. It also fosters
a positive attitude towards reading and learning.
- Have your child make their own flash cards with new words they encounter
from books, television, and magazines.
- Rent educational videos or videos of popular children’s classics.
- Take a trip to your local library!
- First grade students can pull out their take home activities from
kindergarten and review these (holiday bag, spring basket, pizza box).
- Encourage your child to keep a journal of daily activities.
Math:
- Students can visit the Scott Foresman web site at www.SFSuccessnet.com to
complement the Penn-Trafford curriculum. (includes math reinforcing
video games)
User IDs for each grade level are as follows:
- Kindergarten - ptk, First Grade - ptfirst, Second Grade - ptsecond,
- Third Grade – ptthird, Fourth Grade – ptfourth, Fifth
Grade - ptfifth

- For additional practice, revisit memorization and practice of basic
math facts - addition, subtraction, multiplication, division.
Middle School Students-
- Middle school parents can encourage students to read and share novels
or magazine articles.
- To reinforce and practice reading and math skills students can utilize
the Skills Tutor program that they utilize at school, at www.myskillstutor.com. Students
simply enter the password they were given at school.
- Encourage your child to participate in a service project through
the community.
- Complete any long-range assignments or finish reading a novel that
was assigned in class.
- Reinforce or practice reading skills using the McGraw Hill Reading
Site at – http://www.mhschool.com/reading/2005/student/index.html. Click
on “reading” and then click on the drop down box and drag
to McGraw Hill Reading 2003. Find the grade 6 reading book and
click on it.
- Visit a book store or the local library.
High School-
- High school parents can encourage students to read or finish reading
a novel.
- Students can practice for the SAT test by visiting the SAT practice
site at www.collegeboard.com.
- High school students can visit the website of any of their current
textbooks that include this supplement.
- Work on any long-term projects assigned or get a jump-start on your
senior project.
- Volunteer for a community project.
- Visit a bookstore or your local library with a friend.
