Whisper Phones Help Develop Fluent Readers

Ms. Kelsey Majiros, a Student Learning Assistant in the Penn-Trafford School District, has received a grant for her second-grade Guided Reading class at Harrison Park Elementary School.  The grant, provided by DonorsChoose, enabled Majiros to purchase twenty-four whisper phones.

Whisper phones help students enhance their reading comprehension and fluency by enabling students to hear themselves read, without having to worry that others can hear.  When using these devices, kids hold one end of the phone up to their ear and whisper-read into the other end. The phone amplifies their voices, which helps them more clearly hear the sounds and words they’re saying.

“The use of whisper phones provides reluctant readers with an avenue to feel more comfortable while reading aloud,” said Majiros.  “My students have already benefited greatly, and they are on their way to becoming fluent readers."
