Grant Provides Books to Engage Young Readers

Harrison Park Elementary School teacher Mrs. Allie Kleinschmidt has added an assortment of Mo Willems books to her classroom library.  Funds for the books were made possible through DonorsChoose, a crowdfunding resource for teachers.

“Willems’ books are an excellent resource for teaching the functions of punctuation marks as well as how to pick up on cues like enlarged text, bold print words, and italicized words,” said Kleinschmidt.  “We also use the illustrations in these books to practice making inferences about characters' thoughts and feelings.”

Kleinschmidt also finds that the humorous nature of the books keeps students engaged in reading and takes the edge off for students who are struggling to read.
