Students Teach Cinco de Mayo Lessons

Mrs. Burtch’s Spanish 2 Honors classes at Penn-Trafford High School took part in a special Cinco de Mayo project in conjunction with Avonworth Primary (Avonworth School District).

In groups of three or four, the PT students created lessons for Cinco de Mayo that included Spanish vocabulary, a Cinco de Mayo read-aloud book, and an activity.  They were responsible for creating vocabulary handouts and fun activity sheets for all of the first and second-grade classrooms at Avonworth Primary.

On Cinco de Mayo (May 5th), they had the opportunity to teach their lessons via live stream to the Avonworth students.  They interacted with the students, read aloud, taught them about the history of Cinco de Mayo, and got the students excited about Spanish.  “My students were able to experience what it is like to teach others and to make cultural connections to youth in another school district,” commented Burtch.  “They had an amazingly fun time!”

The principal of Avonworth Primary, Dr. Scott Miller,  was a former student of Burtch at Baldwin High School, and the two were excited about collaborating on this project.
