Students Reenact Tomato Battle at Trafford Middle School

The eighth-grade students in Mrs. Rodgers' Spanish classes at Trafford Middle School enjoyed a lesson on "La Tomatina," which is a huge tomato fight that takes place in Spain on the last Wednesday of August.  People from all over the world flock to the small town of Buñol, Spain to take part in this hour-long tomato battle that has become a fun festival and celebrated tradition. Participants throw an estimated 320,000 pounds of crushed tomatoes until a cannon sounds and the clean-up begins. The streets are hosed down and the acid from the tomatoes leaves the town squeaky clean.

Mrs. Rodgers’ students read about this event in both Spanish and English, completed activities with maps, photos, and videos of the fun, and finished their lesson with a (paper) tomato battle of their own.
