Ally Moraca, a Junior at Penn-Trafford High School, has been serving as Trafford Borough’s inaugural ‘Junior Council Person’ (JCP) since September 2022. In this role, Moraca attends monthly council meetings and spends at least one additional day per month touring borough facilities or meeting with various borough managers.
Trafford Borough’s Council President, Kris Cardiff, developed the JCP program to bring awareness of local government to the region’s youth. To help educate Moraca, as well as the general public, of the many facets of local government, Cardiff integrates monthly themes at council meetings such as police operations, parliamentary procedures, and the role of the solicitor.
When Moraca begins the second year of her JCP term her Senior year of high school, Cardiff hopes to have an additional member come aboard as a Junior. He will be presenting the program at Penn-Trafford High School and encouraging students to apply.
“Local government is the most direct opportunity the citizens have to work with and provide a voice to their elected representatives that make the critical decisions that affect day-to-day life in our communities,” commented Mr. Cardiff. “Although the majority of high school students are not able to vote for these individuals, their thoughts and concerns are valuable for the future development of our towns. The Junior Council Person Program is designed to not only fill that gap but also educate and prepare the future leaders in our communities. I’m very proud of Ally and everything she has done to help develop this program with us. I look forward to seeing her in a leadership role in the Fall of 2023 and help Trafford Borough mentor the new incoming members of the JCP Program.”
