During the week of September 8, Mr. Pompilio’s classes at Sunrise Elementary School tackled a special writing project to honor the memory of September 11th, 2001, and to celebrate the heroism shown that day. Inspired by the story of Welles Crowther, known as “The Man in the Red Bandana,” students learned about his bravery and selflessness as he helped save lives during the tragic events of 9/11.
After discussing his story, students reflected on the qualities that make someone a hero - courage, kindness, sacrifice, and leadership. Each student then selected a personal hero of their own, someone who inspires them, and wrote a heartfelt letter to give that person, along with a symbolic red bandana.
“Through this project, students practiced their writing skills while also gaining a deeper understanding of empathy, gratitude, and the power of individual acts of heroism,” commented Mr. Pompilio. “Our goal was not only to honor Welles’ legacy but also to help students recognize the everyday heroes in their own lives.”
