Navy Veteran Supports First Grade Learning

First-grade students at Harrison Park Elementary School recently completed a reading curriculum unit centered on the question, “What does it mean to be patriotic?”

As part of the unit, students were introduced to key vocabulary, including the word “veteran.” To deepen their understanding, the students welcomed staff member Katie Halicke, a United States Navy veteran, into their classrooms to share her experiences.

Halicke, who now works as a personal care assistant (PCA) at Harrison Park, served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years, retiring at the rank of E-6. Her career included 13 years of active duty and seven years as a drilling reservist. During her visit, she spoke with students about her time in service and answered questions about life in the Navy.

One of the best parts of the Navy is getting to see the excitement on the faces of all the kiddos, though,” commented Halicke after the visits.
