‘Buddy Program’ Connects 3rd-Graders with High School Mentors

Penn-Trafford School District held its annual Big Buddy Day in mid-April, continuing a tradition that has connected high school and elementary students for more than 20 years. The event is part of the district’s Big Buddy program, sponsored by the high school Community Action Program (CAP). This year’s event was organized by CAP member, senior Kaitlyn Long.

Throughout the school year, high school students who volunteered as “big buddies” were paired with third-grade students from each of the district’s five elementary schools. The pairs exchanged letters over several months, sharing details about their interests, families, and school experiences. In addition, high school students used the correspondence to encourage positive habits such as working hard and helping others.

The students met in person for Big Buddy Day, which was held at Warrior Stadium. CAP volunteers organized a variety of carnival-style activities, including Connect-4, cornhole, football, a potato sack race, and jump rope. The event also included snacks and a visit from Kona Ice, providing an opportunity for students to spend time together and strengthen the connections formed throughout the year.
